There has been no escaping life in the sunshine this summer! According to KVUE reporting, July 2023 was the hottest on record with an average temperature of 90.7 and 24 day streak of triple digit heat. Our current drought conditions have burned up yards, shrunk lake levels and closed swimming holes. We’ve been lucky over the years that our droughts have been short-lived and the water has come back.
However, things are different now – we’ve had a massive influx of new businesses and residents and Central Texas cities have expanded. Experts are warning of a water crisis. This is a critical time and an opportunity to look at our current water usage and to design communities, neighborhoods and homes that do more with less.

Here are a few things you can do to conserve water in your home today:

  1. Fix all leaking or dripping faucets
  2. Take shorter showers
  3. Install water saving shower heads or flow restrictors
  4. Use dishwasher and washing machine for full loads only
  5. Water your lawn sparingly or better yet, replace grass with turf or xeriscaping.
  6. Plant native species that are drought resistant and require less water
  7. Install rain water collection systems

Courtney’s Insights:
Extreme heat and drought conditions can impact your home and its’ marketability. Post-pandemic and now in an intense drought, homes with pools are selling better than the competition.
It’s tough and expensive to get contractors to work in these conditions so homes that have already been remodeled are selling better than the outdated competition.
Established landscaping and mature trees are invaluable when in comes to providing shade and natural cooling to a home and yard.
