Ivy Ross is a VP and head of product design at Google— she leads a team that designs future products for the home.
Here’s what she sees:
THE QUEST FOR NOT JUST COMFORT, BUT BALANCE
This is not just a public health crisis, but an existential one, which calls into question our core values, and how those values play out in the environment around us.
THE RISE OF FLEXIBLE HOMES
What this has shown us is things can change in the blink of an eye. And what we’re going to want to do is be more prepared for flexibility.
Here’s how I’m seeing physical spaces change.
COFFEE STATIONS AND FULL BARS
Built-in espresso machines will full-blown barista capabilities are everywhere! Wine cellars have been here for while but there’s a trend towards cocktail creation – you need a place for your mixology!
AIR FILTRATION SYSTEMS
HVAC systems are going to get smarter and more health conscious.
Remember in the 90’s when Sport Courts became a thing? They are back along with resort style pools, fire pits, zip lines and outdoor sound systems and lighting.
One word, Peloton! People are working out at home and need designated, wi-fi enabled, spaces to “Just Do It.”
It probably goes without saying, but every home system is going to be tech-enabled. Your toaster and TV will be talking!

Next week, the U.S. will get economic news like it has never seen before, reflecting growth that had seemed impossible, as it is likely that US GDP will have risen by about 30% or more in the third quarter of 2020. In the middle of a pandemic. In the middle of a recession. In the middle of 12.5 million unemployed people. This after a 31.4% plunge in the second quarter. For GDP to fully recover, though, would require a 45% rise in GDP, so while 30+% is phenomenal, we still have quite a way to go before a full recovery.

The coronavirus pandemic is leading to a new phenomenon: a migration to “gateway communities,” or small towns near major public lands and ski resorts as people’s jobs increasingly become remote-friendly.
