The sun is about to set and temperatures are expected to get down to 9 degrees. Here are some tips to help keep you and your property safe throughout the night and chilly days ahead.
Drip outside faucets 24 hours a day (5 drops a minute). This is not necessary unless temperatures are expected to be 28 degrees or below for at least four hours. (Be sure to turn off the faucets after the threat of freezing weather.) Open cabinet doors under sinks adjacent to outside walls.
STOCK UP ON SUPPLIES Stock up on emergency supplies including drinkable water, food, a radio or similar method of listening to the news, and warm clothes. You may also want to stock up on important medications if anyone in your home is treating a long-term condition. |
FILL YOUR BATHTUB
Fill your bathtub full of water. This is an old standby for emergency preparations: fill your bathtub up with water before the storm hits. The water can be used to flush toilets, clean dishes or it can be purified and used as extra drinking water.
WRAP PIPES & REMOVE HOSES
Wrap all exposed pipes located outside or in unheated areas of the home. Remove garden hoses from outside faucets. Insulate outside faucets with Styrofoam cover, rags or paper.
