The Human Advantage
It Happened! We received a phone call this week from a gentleman in who needs to sell his home.
He works in tech and has been living here on a four-year work visa, a path that has brought thousands of talented people to Austin. His company informed him that his visa will not be renewed. Advances in AI have made the company efficient enough that it no longer needs people filling many of those roles.
And suddenly, something we have all been talking about became very real.
I think most of us knew this was coming. We have talked about AI replacing jobs, reorganizing industries and changing the way we work. But those conversations have largely been theoretical.
Until they aren’t…Now there is a man looking around his house and figuring out what comes next. He won’t be the only one.
We are living through an extraordinary reshuffling of how the world works. We are still in the earliest stages of understanding AI, yet we are barreling forward because the immediate benefits are enormous, measurable and genuinely positive.
What we don’t know are the long-term consequences.
Human beings have been here before. New technologies arrive. Productivity increases. Industries disappear and new ones emerge. People adapt.
But knowing that intellectually doesn’t make it any easier to be the person whose livelihood is caught in the transition. Because underneath all of the conversations about efficiency and innovation are human beings. People with mortgages and children who built careers around skills they believed would provide for their families. People who made decisions about where to live, what house to buy and what kind of future they could afford based on a level of certainty that suddenly doesn’t feel quite so certain.
And that is where this technological revolution becomes very personal for me.
A home is usually the largest financial asset a person owns, but it represents something much bigger. Home is tied to our sense of physical security, financial security and belonging. When someone’s career changes unexpectedly, all of those things can suddenly feel unsettled.
For one person, this moment may be the permission they needed to sell everything, pack a few bags and move to Costa Rica.
For another, it may mean doing everything possible to hold onto the life they have built. Neither response is wrong.
Increasingly, I think our job in real estate will be about much more than determining what a house is worth or negotiating a contract. It will be about sitting across the table from people during moments of enormous change and helping them understand their options without pretending that any of us knows exactly what comes next.
Our industry will change too. AI will change how homes are marketed, how information is gathered, how transactions happen and probably dozens of things we haven’t imagined yet. I embrace that. I use these tools. I see their extraordinary potential. But strangely, the more technology advances, the more valuable I believe something decidedly old-fashioned becomes:
Being human.
Knowing someone.
Trusting someone.
Having a person you can call when life suddenly doesn’t look the way you thought it would.
I am incredibly grateful for the relationships that have grown out of this work, for the clients who became friends, the families who have called me through multiple chapters of their lives, and the trust people have placed in me when the decisions were much bigger than simply buying or selling a house.
I don’t know exactly what the next ten years will look like. None of us do. But I know what I want my place in them to be. I want to keep learning. I want to embrace the tools that make us better. I want to remain curious about what comes next. And I want to stay deeply human.
So if this changing landscape eventually reaches your career, your family, your finances or your home, know this: You don’t have to have all the answers before you call me.
We’ll sit down.
We’ll look at what is actually happening.
We’ll figure out your options.
And we’ll navigate whatever comes next together.
