Protect Your Home from Freezing
The forecast is calling for freezing temperatures in Austin this weekend. Make sure your home is ready!

Guard Pipes
To keep outdoor plumbing fixtures from freezing, disconnect and store any garden hoses as the weather begins to turn cold. Then, shut off the water to your outdoor faucets, drain the lines, and insulate the hose bibs.

Drip Faucets
If any of your indoor faucets are located on exterior walls that aren’t adequately insulated, set your faucets to a slow drip whenever temperatures dip well below freezing. For maximum effectiveness, make sure both the hot and cold lines are opened slightly since both are vulnerable.

Water Shut Off
Should a water line ever freeze and burst, you will need to shut off the home’s water supply immediately. If anything is blocking easy access to your main water shut valve off, take action so that it’s easily accessible in the event of a plumbing emergency.

Insulation
Many older homes have little or no insulation in the attic. Adding insulation to the attic or walls can make a big difference in winter (conserving heat) and summer (keeping the cool air in). Insulation helps with home efficiency as well as protection plumbing pipes.

Generator
Your furnace and water heaters cannot do their job if there is no electricity. Consider a dual use generator for natural gas and liquid propane or gasoline to automatically power your home. Besides maintaining heating systems, a generator can keep the WiFi connected, the leak detection operating, and cold food in your refrigerator.
