Hand holding tennis ball with heart message

HOW A TENNIS COURT
CHANGED EVERYTHING

Many of you probably know that I’m a little obsessed with tennis.

What you may not know is how that obsession began.

About four years ago, we purchased 13 acres with plans to redevelop it. Like so many worthwhile endeavors, the journey has been full of incredible highs…and some very real lows. The original property happened to have an old tennis court, and during one of those more challenging seasons, we were determined to create something positive while we waited for the bigger vision to unfold. So one evening, Brett and I wandered into an old storage shed, found a couple of dusty rackets and some old tennis balls, and started hitting. We did it again the next night. Then the next. Before long, we bought fresh tennis balls, upgraded to beginner rackets, and decided maybe we should actually learn how to play.

What started as a way to pass the time (and to work out some very real frustration) became something much bigger.

We joined Westlake Country Club, started taking lessons, played mixed doubles and kept pushing ourselves to improve. Tennis has challenged us, but even more importantly, it has connected us. It’s introduced us to an incredible community of friends, not just at the club, but throughout Austin and beyond.

The more I think about it, the more I realize tennis isn’t all that different from real estate.

People often think they’re buying a house, but what they’re really searching for is a sense of belonging. Sometimes it’s the neighborhood pool, the trails, the parks, the pickleball courts, or simply neighbors who become lifelong friends. Home is about finding a community where you can truly be yourself while also becoming part of something bigger than yourself.

For years, that’s exactly what we’ve hoped to help create through The Oldham Group. Whether it’s our Easter Egg Hunt, Fall Festival, client events, or even this weekly newsletter, our goal has always been to build community, not just transactions.

In many ways, this newsletter has become its own little community. Every week it gives me a chance to pause, reflect on the week behind us, and capture a small moment in time. It’s become a time capsule of our shared journey.

So thank you. Thank you for trusting us with one of the biggest decisions of your lives, for allowing us to be part of your story, and for being part of ours. Whether we met through real estate, tennis, or somewhere in between, I’m grateful we’re building this community together.
