I had the distinct privilege of attending Icon’s “A Moonshot for Affordable Housing Panel”, part of the SXSW23 Conference. The standing room only crowd included the likes of Bjarke Ingels, Michelle Addington, Alan Graham, Liz Lambert and more! Some of the most brilliant, innovative and creative minds from around the world provided insights on today’s affordability challenges and the need for a building, planning, and design revolution!
Key Highlights:
- The US Housing Market is short 6.5 Million homes
- 1.2 billion humans do not have adequate housing
- We have “squeezed” everything we possibly can out of traditional construction methods.
- New thinking and ideas will have to drive a housing future that’s better than where we are today.
- Icon launched Initiative 99 – A worldwide contest with a $1M prize for the BEST house built for $99K.
The passionate conversation ended with food, drink and entertainment by @primothealien, @thebrosfresh, and @temecajones on the new installed Icon 3D printed stage at the Long Center pictured below. 🎶
